Pakistan’s maritime defence capability has reached a new milestone with the induction of the first Hangor-class submarine into the Pakistan Navy during a formal commissioning ceremony held in Sanya, China.
The ceremony was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari as the chief guest, alongside Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and senior naval officials. The induction marks a significant development in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its naval forces and enhance its strategic maritime posture.
Addressing the ceremony, President Asif Ali Zardari described the induction of the Hangor-class submarine as a historic milestone in the Pakistan Navy’s journey of technological advancement. He reaffirmed that Pakistan possesses the capability to defend its sovereignty, safeguard maritime interests, and protect vital economic corridors. He further emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a strong, balanced, and credible defence framework.
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted the growing challenges facing global maritime security, noting that disruptions along critical sea lanes pose risks to international trade and energy security. He stressed the need for modern, technology-driven naval forces to ensure a stable and rules-based maritime order.
The Naval Chief stated that Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced weapons systems, modern sensors, and Air Independent Propulsion technology, enabling them to play a decisive role in maintaining regional maritime stability. He added that these platforms will contribute significantly to deterrence and to the protection of key sea routes across the Arabian Sea and the broader Indian Ocean region.
Admiral Ashraf also underscored the historical significance of the Hangor name in Pakistan’s naval heritage, recalling the legacy of the original PNS Hangor, which holds the distinction of being the first submarine since the Second World War to sink an enemy warship during the 1971 conflict. He noted that the new Hangor-class submarine continues this legacy and represents a major advancement in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defence through modern technology.
The induction of the first Hangor-class submarine was also described as a reflection of the enduring strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, adding another chapter to their long-standing cooperation in defence and technology.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir extended congratulations to the nation and the Pakistan Navy on this landmark achievement, terming it a moment of national pride and strategic significance.
