A Key Taliban Insider Detained… Power Struggle or Something Deeper?

Taliban, Mullah Agha Jan Motasim, Rifts within Afghan Taliban, Kandahari Group vs Haqqani Group, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada

Mullah Agha Jan Motasim, a long-time insider of the Afghan Taliban and a close associate of the group’s founder Mullah Mohammad Omar, has once again emerged at the center of attention, this time over reports of his alleged detention in Kandahar, a development that is being closely watched for what it may reveal about internal dynamics within the Taliban leadership.

Motasim has historically been regarded as one of the most influential figures within the Taliban hierarchy. Having served in key roles including finance minister and chief of staff, he remained deeply embedded in the group’s decision-making structure for years. Between 2003 and 2013, he was widely considered one of the most powerful figures within the Taliban leadership, second only to Mullah Akhtar Mansour in terms of influence.

His trajectory, however, has not been without turbulence. In 2012, a serious rift emerged between Motasim and Mullah Akhtar Mansour over disputes related to Taliban finances. The disagreement reportedly escalated to the point where Motasim was targeted in an attack in Quetta, during which he sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Severely injured, he is said to have sought assistance from General Abdul Raziq, then a powerful police commander in Kandahar, who facilitated his safe transfer to the city.

Following initial medical care, Motasim was moved to Bagram Air Base for treatment, after which he spent several years in exile, including time in Turkey and later in the United Arab Emirates. This period marked a significant pause in his direct involvement in Taliban affairs.

His re-entry into the Afghan political landscape came in 2023, when the Taliban’s defence minister Mullah Yaqoob reportedly met him in Dubai and invited him to return to Afghanistan. Upon his return, Motasim began to gradually rebuild his influence, particularly in Kandahar, a city that remains central to Taliban power structures.

Why Is His Reported Arrest Controversial?

According to recent reports, Mullah Agha Jan Motasim was taken into custody on April 13 during an operation in Kandahar. However, these reports remain contested, with pro-Taliban sources denying that any such arrest has taken place. The lack of official confirmation has further added to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.

What makes the reported detention particularly significant is the context in which it has emerged. Since his return, Motasim’s growing visibility and influence in Kandahar had led some observers to view him as a potential alternative within the Taliban’s leadership structure, particularly in relation to the group’s supreme leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada.

An Afghan journalist, commenting on the situation, suggested that if the reports of Motasim’s arrest are accurate, they could point toward intensifying internal competition and a lack of trust within the Taliban leadership. Such developments, if confirmed, would indicate underlying fractures within a structure that has often projected unity.

At the same time, the absence of verified information means that drawing definitive conclusions remains premature. The situation continues to evolve, and whether these reports signal a deeper internal shift or remain part of contested narratives is yet to be established.
