Security forces eliminated a key terrorist affiliated with the banned Jamaat-ul-Ahrar during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Bajaur district, security sources said on Monday.
According to security officials, the operation was launched after intelligence agencies received credible information regarding the presence of militants in the area. Acting on the intelligence, security forces carried out a targeted operation, leading to an exchange of fire in which the group’s important militant, identified as Osama Jan, was killed.
Officials described the operation as part of Pakistan’s continuing intelligence-led counterterrorism campaign aimed at dismantling militant networks and preventing planned attacks before they can be executed. They added that intelligence-based operations have become an increasingly important component of the country’s security strategy, enabling forces to act on credible information with precision while minimizing risks to the civilian population.
Security sources said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to deny militant groups the ability to regroup or establish operational footholds in vulnerable areas. They reiterated that such operations would continue until all elements involved in militant violence are brought to justice.
Following the operation, security forces launched a clearance and sanitization exercise in the surrounding area to ensure that no other militants remained in hiding. Authorities are also collecting forensic and intelligence evidence to determine whether the slain militant had links to recent or planned terrorist activities.
Bajaur, owing to its geographical location, has witnessed numerous counterterrorism operations over the years. Officials maintain that sustained intelligence coordination, timely action, and close cooperation among security and law enforcement agencies have significantly strengthened the state’s ability to respond to evolving security threats.
Security analysts say intelligence-based operations have become increasingly effective because they focus on preventing attacks before they occur, disrupting militant planning, logistics, and command structures. They believe such operations not only eliminate high-value targets but also help reduce the operational capability of militant networks.
The latest operation comes amid continued efforts by Pakistan’s security forces and law enforcement agencies to maintain pressure on militant organizations across the country. Earlier, a Rangers soldier embraced martyrdom after security forces came under attack during a law-and-order response in Rawalakot, while in Peshawar’s Hassan Khel area, Bomb Disposal Unit constable Khaista Rahman Khan was martyred when an explosive device detonated during a disposal operation. Officials say these incidents underscore the continuing challenges faced by security personnel and reinforce the resolve of the country’s security institutions to sustain intelligence-led and preventive counterterrorism efforts.
