A police constable embraced martyrdom after an explosive device detonated during a bomb disposal operation in the Hassan Khel subdivision of Peshawar on Monday, police officials said.
According to police, authorities received information about an explosive device planted near an abandoned checkpost in the Fakire Band area of Hassan Khel. Acting on the report, a Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) team was immediately dispatched to the site to secure the area and safely neutralize the explosive.
During the disposal process, however, the device exploded, critically injuring Constable Khaista Rahman Khan, who succumbed to his injuries in the line of duty.
Following the blast, additional police personnel and security officials rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched a search operation to ensure no further explosive devices had been planted nearby. Forensic experts are also expected to examine the site to determine the nature of the explosive and gather evidence that may assist the investigation.
Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident, while efforts are underway to identify those responsible for planting the explosive device. Officials said legal action would be taken against the perpetrators in accordance with the law.
The martyrdom of Constable Khaista Rahman Khan serves as a reminder of the risks routinely faced by bomb disposal personnel and police officers, who are often the first responders to potential security threats. Their work in detecting and neutralizing explosive devices plays a critical role in safeguarding civilian lives and maintaining public safety.
Senior police officials paid tribute to the fallen constable, describing his sacrifice as an act of courage and dedication in the service of the nation. They reaffirmed the resolve of the police force to continue carrying out its duties despite persistent security challenges and emphasized that such incidents would not diminish the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting the public.
Investigations into the explosion are continuing.
