In a significant diplomatic acknowledgement, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again praised Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, for his instrumental role in preventing a potential nuclear conflict between Pakistan and India.
Speaking at a press conference following the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump referred to the fragile India-Pakistan ceasefire, stating: “We helped broker peace between India and Pakistan. Both are nuclear-armed nations, a conflict could’ve turned catastrophic.”
The American president emphasized that multiple calls were made to both sides urging restraint and encouraging dialogue over warfare. “I told them, don’t fight, do trade,” he added.
Trump once again singled out Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying: “I met him, he’s a remarkable man, deeply impressive. A man of peace and strength.”
The praise echoed sentiments he shared just days earlier during a formal luncheon at the White House, held in the Pakistani military chief’s honour. “It was a privilege to meet Field Marshal Munir. I invited him to thank him personally for preventing a war with India,” Trump had told reporters following the meeting.
President Trump also revealed that discussions with Asim Munir extended beyond South Asia, touching on Iran, Israel, Rwanda, and the Congo, all regions where Trump claims to have played a role in halting hostilities.
Additionally, he confirmed that trade negotiations with Pakistan are underway, highlighting the importance of regional peace in enabling economic cooperation.
“We are working on trade deals, peace is good for business,” he remarked.
The acknowledgement comes amid reports that tensions had recently flared along the Pakistan-India border, raising fears of escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. While details remain confidential, intelligence insiders suggest that discreet military diplomacy, led by Field Marshal Munir, helped de-escalate the situation through back-channel communication.
President Trump’s repeated public praise of Field Marshal Asim Munir signals the growing strategic importance of Pakistan’s military leadership on the global stage. In a volatile region with deep-rooted rivalries, Munir’s role as a stabilising force is being internationally recognised, and his leadership, at least in Trump’s view, is both admirable and indispensable.
