Security tensions in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province have once again escalated, with reports of armed clashes, subsequent arrests, and a heightened military presence in Paryan district, underscoring continuing instability in the region amid repeated confrontations between local resistance elements and Taliban forces.

Local sources reported that armed clashes took place on Thursday, May 7, in parts of Paryan district, followed by a Taliban operation in Kojan village on Friday, May 8, during which at least seven individuals were detained. Taliban authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incidents or the arrests, while the identities of those taken into custody remain unconfirmed.

According to local accounts, tensions in the area have been building over several months, beginning with incidents such as the burning of a Taliban Ranger vehicle in Kojan village on December 18, 2025. In subsequent months, further violent episodes were reported, including an attack on a Taliban base at a mosque in Paryan in April 2026, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of two Taliban personnel, as well as the killing of Mullah Gul Haider, described as a Taliban deputy intelligence officer, in the same locality.

Following these developments, reports indicate that Taliban carried out large-scale operations in the area, including arrests of civilians from Kojan village. Local sources also allege instances of mistreatment of detainees, though these claims remain unverified.

On the night of May 5, renewed clashes were reported when Taliban forces reportedly encountered resistance from two separate directions during an operation targeting suspected hideouts in the Samhar Dara area. According to local accounts, the attacking force reportedly withdrew after suffering casualties.

The security situation in Paryan district is currently described as heavily militarized, with residents reporting increased restrictions, arrests, and movement controls. In Kojan village, strict curfew measures have also been imposed, limiting civilian movement after evening hours.

Similar tensions have also been reported in Badakhshan province, where recent clashes and operations have reportedly resulted in several fatalities at the hands of Taliban forces, further highlighting the widening pattern of unrest across northeastern Afghanistan.
