A newly formed armed group in northeastern Afghanistan has declared war against Taliban forces, signaling a potential escalation of tensions in Badakhshan province.
According to reports from local sources, a 30-member Tajik armed group led by Zabit Karim has announced the start of an organized resistance in the Khastak Valley. The group described its move as the beginning of a broader “public freedom struggle” and called on local residents to rise against Taliban control and support its efforts.
In response, Taliban forces have reportedly mobilized additional units to the area from both the provincial capital and Baharak district. Sources indicate an increased security presence and heightened military activity in and around Khastak Valley.
Although no clashes have been reported so far, the situation remains highly tense. Local residents are closely monitoring developments amid growing concerns that fighting could erupt at any moment. Both sides are believed to be preparing for a possible confrontation.
Security analysts warn that any outbreak of violence could extend beyond Khastak Valley and further destabilize Badakhshan province. Given the region’s geographic sensitivity, escalating conflict may have broader implications for stability in northeastern Afghanistan.
Due to limited access to the area, independent verification of all claims remains challenging. Observers stress the need for continued monitoring as the situation develops.
