Pakistan has formally decided to brief the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the latest regional developments, particularly in response to India’s aggressive actions and provocations. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has directed Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN to initiate steps for convening a meeting of the Security Council.
According to Dawn News, the Foreign Office spokesperson stated in an official communiqué that Pakistan will apprise the UNSC of India’s illegal and provocative actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The spokesperson emphasized that India’s belligerent policies are endangering peace and stability not only in South Asia but also beyond the region. Highlighting the Indian government’s unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan will underscore its illegality and the grave consequences such actions could entail.
The move, described as a critical diplomatic initiative, is part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to present the facts clearly before the international community.
Tensions escalated following the killing of 26 tourists in the Muslim-majority region of Pahalgam in Indian-occupied Kashmir on April 22. In response, India announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty on April 23.
Pakistan responded firmly during a National Security Committee meeting by deciding to sever trade ties with India, close the Wagah border, suspend Indian airline operations through Pakistani airspace, and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Indian nationals to leave Pakistan.
The United Nations, expressing concern over the growing hostilities, urged both countries to exercise restraint. UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, in a press briefing, stressed the need for maximum restraint and called for peaceful resolution of disputes through meaningful bilateral engagement.
China, a longstanding ally of Pakistan, also appealed for calm. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed hope that both sides would resolve their disputes through dialogue and consultation, reach a compromise, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability. He reiterated that China welcomes all initiatives aimed at de-escalation.
Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also called on both Pakistan and India to defuse tensions and resume dialogue. The GCC urged the international community to intensify efforts for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
Pakistan remains committed to seeking peace through diplomacy but will continue to expose unlawful and destabilizing actions that threaten regional and global stability.
