UK Foreign Office Issues Travel Advisory for Nine High-Risk Countries, Including Afghanistan

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a new travel advisory warning British citizens against all travel to nine countries, citing serious safety and security concerns. Afghanistan, in particular, has been highlighted as highly dangerous due to volatile conditions.

The advisory underscores the extreme hazards of traveling across Afghanistan, where armed conflict, political instability, arbitrary detention, and natural disasters pose significant risks. The FCDO also notes that border crossings may be closed without prior notice, further complicating travel.

Alongside Afghanistan, the countries included in the advisory are Iran, South Sudan, Russia, Haiti, Belarus, Libya, Syria, and Yemen. Specific mention was made of Iran, where British and dual British-Iranian nationals face an increased risk of arrest and detention, with connections to the UK potentially being grounds for detention by Iranian authorities.

Russia was added to the list due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, with the FCDO citing the risk of terrorist attacks, drone strikes, and limited flight availability as major concerns for travellers.

The FCDO has urged British citizens to reconsider any travel plans to these regions, prioritizing their safety and closely monitoring developments.
