Jamiat-e Islami Commander Shah Wali Khan Assassinated in Ghor, Claims Former Balkh Governor

Atta Mohammad Noor, former governor of Balkh and senior member of the National Resistance Council for Salvation of Afghanistan, has claimed that Shah Wali Khan, a prominent commander of Jamiat-e Islami, was assassinated in Ghor province in what he described as a politically motivated killing.

According to Noor, the incident occurred on March 27, shortly after Khan’s release from Taliban intelligence custody. The Taliban has not yet responded to the allegation.

In a statement posted Friday on social media platform X, Noor accused the Taliban of a series of “crimes” since assuming power, including targeted assassinations. He said the killing of Wali Khan was part of a wider pattern of political, ethnic, and religious purges carried out by the group. “In many instances, these killings aim at ethnic cleansing and political, religious, and local purges,” Noor said.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has previously reported ongoing human rights violations against former government officials and members of the country’s previous defence and security forces, despite the Taliban’s announcement of a general amnesty in 2021.
