The National Resistance Front (NRF) has claimed responsibility for an overnight attack on a Taliban checkpoint in Badakhshan province, reporting that three Taliban members were wounded in the exchange of fire.
According to a statement issued by the NRF on Friday, the attack took place at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, in the Danishabad area of Yaftal-e Payin district.
The group said its fighters targeted a Taliban checkpoint and engaged Taliban personnel in a confrontation that lasted approximately 40 minutes. The NRF claimed that three Taliban members were wounded during the fighting and said that none of its own forces suffered casualties. The Taliban has not publicly commented on the reported attack or the casualty claims at the time of publication.
The reported confrontation adds to growing indications of renewed tensions between Taliban authorities and armed groups opposed to their rule in parts of Afghanistan. According to the NRF statement, its forces launched the attack against the checkpoint late Thursday night, targeting a position in the Danishabad area.
The group claimed that its fighters were able to engage the Taliban forces for roughly 40 minutes before the confrontation ended.
Local sources also reportedly confirmed that clashes had occurred in the area, although independent details regarding the circumstances of the fighting and the number of casualties remain limited. The latest reported clash comes amid a period of heightened attention to security developments in Badakhshan, where anti-Taliban groups have increasingly claimed attacks and armed confrontations in recent weeks.
Yaftal-e Payin has previously featured in reports of opposition activity. In recent months, forces opposed to the Taliban reportedly managed to take control of parts of the district for several hours before the Taliban regained control.
The episode highlighted the continuing security challenges confronting the Taliban despite its consolidation of power across most of Afghanistan.
