Khawarij Drone Strike in Central Kurram Leaves Several Dead, Including Women and Children; Multiple Others Critically Injured

A tragic security-related incident was reported in the Tondori area of Werasta, Central Kurram, where Khawarij carried out a drone-based attack, resulting in heavy civilian casualties, including women and children.

According to initial reports, the attack targeted a residential house belonging to a local resident, identified as Reais Khan. As a result of the strike, four members of the same family, including women and children, were killed on the spot. In addition, four other individuals sustained serious injuries.

The injured were immediately shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Sadda for urgent medical treatment. Medical officials confirmed that initial life-saving care was provided on arrival, after which some of the critically injured patients were referred to higher-level healthcare facilities, including the District Headquarters Hospital Parachinar and THQ Hospital Ali Zai, due to the severity of injuries and limited capacity at the Sadda facility.

The tragic incident followed earlier reports of armed engagements, during which Khawarij had reportedly targeted Mir Bagh and Badama police check posts with small and heavy weapon fire. The subsequent strike in the Tondori area further escalated the situation, resulting in significant civilian loss of life and injuries.

In response to public discourse and criticism circulating on social media regarding the availability of healthcare services at THQ Hospital Sadda, hospital sources clarified that the facility received an unusually high number of critically injured patients within a short time frame. Despite limited capacity, all available medical resources were fully utilized to provide emergency care and stabilization.

Officials further explained that the THQ Hospital Sadda serves as a key healthcare facility not only for Central Kurram but also for Lower Kurram, effectively functioning as a regional hub in emergency situations. Given its dual administrative and operational role, the hospital frequently experiences capacity challenges during mass casualty incidents. Authorities emphasized that patients were transferred to nearby hospitals solely to ensure timely and advanced medical treatment under emergency conditions.

Hospital representatives maintained that all possible measures were taken within existing resources to manage the situation effectively, including triage, stabilization, and onward referral of critical cases. They added that expansion of medical infrastructure, increased staffing, and enhanced funding for the region’s healthcare system are essential to better handle future emergencies without requiring inter-facility transfers.

Local residents have also highlighted longstanding concerns regarding insufficient healthcare facilities in the region, noting that both Central and Lower Kurram rely heavily on THQ Hospital Sadda as a primary referral center. Community members stressed that strengthening healthcare capacity in line with regional needs could significantly improve emergency response outcomes in situations of mass casualty and crisis.

Authorities have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and reiterated their commitment to providing all possible support to the affected families. Security operations and further assessments in the area are ongoing.
