KP Police to Develop Comprehensive Strategy to Prevent Use of Mining Explosives in Terrorism

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police have decided to formulate a comprehensive strategy aimed at preventing the misuse of mining explosives in terrorist activities, following emerging evidence indicating their increasing use in improvised explosive device (IED) attacks across the province.

According to police officials, credible forensic and intelligence findings have confirmed the use of mining-related explosive materials in multiple recent IED incidents. Authorities noted that in at least ten separate cases, such materials were reportedly utilized by terrorist elements to carry out attacks targeting security forces and civilians.

In response to this growing security concern, law enforcement agencies have initiated a structured review process to identify supply chains, regulatory gaps, and potential sources through which such explosives are being diverted for illegal and malicious purposes.

Police authorities confirmed that specialized committees will be established under the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Special Branch to develop targeted measures for controlling and preventing the illegal use of explosive materials in terrorist activities.

These committees will be tasked with conducting a detailed assessment of existing mechanisms governing the storage, transport, and distribution of mining explosives, and recommending enhanced regulatory and operational safeguards to prevent their misuse.

Officials further stated that the initiative will include broader coordination among relevant departments to trace and monitor alternative sources of explosive materials potentially being exploited by terrorist networks. The objective is to strengthen oversight, improve tracking systems, and ensure stricter compliance with safety and legal frameworks.

Law enforcement agencies emphasized that the evolving tactics of terrorist groups require adaptive and proactive responses, particularly in restricting access to materials that can be repurposed for high-impact attacks.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public life and maintaining law and order across the province. Authorities stressed that efforts are ongoing to disrupt terrorist logistics, enhance intelligence capabilities, and prevent future incidents involving explosive materials.

The police department affirmed that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that industrial and commercial explosive resources are not misused for unlawful purposes, and that those responsible for diversion or facilitation will be identified and brought to justice.
