A former Afghan security commander and police officer was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Afghanistan’s Ghor province, according to local sources.
Sources told Afghan media that Commander Sirajuddin, a former police officer in Ghor and a former jihadi commander, was killed on Sunday when armed assailants attacked him outside his residence in Pay Hisar village of Taywara district.
According to reports, the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on Sirajuddin before fleeing the scene. He died on the spot as a result of his injuries.
The slain commander was known to be a close associate of former Ghor governor Mohammad Ibrahim Malikzada, a prominent political figure in the province.
Sources claimed that since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, at least ten individuals linked to Malikzada, including several members of his family, have been killed in separate incidents, raising concerns about a continuing pattern of targeted violence.
No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the latest killing, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Taliban authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident or announced any arrests.
The attack underscores the continuing security challenges in parts of Afghanistan, where targeted killings and unresolved attacks continue to generate concern among local communities and political observers.
