Russia and China have expressed concern over the security situation in Afghanistan, warning that terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory pose a threat to regional and international stability.

The concerns were highlighted following a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which a joint communiqué was issued addressing terrorism, extremism and regional security challenges linked to Afghanistan.

According to the statement, both countries stressed the importance of preventing Afghan territory from being used by terrorist organizations and warned that the continued presence and support of such groups could undermine peace and security across the region. The communiqué also voiced concerns regarding the role of the Taliban in addressing the threat posed by extremist and terrorist networks.

The statement emphasized that lasting peace in Afghanistan requires political stability, effective governance and the establishment of a secure environment capable of preventing terrorist organizations from operating freely.

Regional Security Concerns Move Back into Focus

Russia and China also called for greater international cooperation to ensure that Afghan territory is not used against neighboring countries. The two sides stressed that coordinated regional efforts are necessary to contain terrorism and prevent instability from spreading beyond Afghanistan’s borders.

Observers monitoring developments in the region say concerns over terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan have increasingly become a major issue for neighboring states. They note that the joint position articulated by Moscow and Beijing broadly aligns with longstanding calls from regional countries for stronger action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil.

Analysts further argue that sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan remain critical to wider regional security, warning that unresolved security challenges inside the country could continue to affect neighboring states and broader international peace efforts.
