Armed Khawarij affiliated with the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) allegedly carried out a major robbery operation in the Domel area of Bannu district, looting more than Rs. 80 million from a bank cash van in a brazen assault, according to local sources.
The attackers, heavily armed and operating in a coordinated manner, reportedly intercepted the cash vehicle while it was transporting funds believed to belong to the public and various financial account holders. During the operation, the assailants also seized four rifles and two pistols from the security personnel accompanying the cash van.
Sources familiar with the incident stated that the stolen amount constituted public funds entrusted to the banking system, which the Khawarij allegedly treated as “war booty” during the raid. The armed men reportedly held the cash van staff hostage at gunpoint before fleeing the scene with the money and weapons.
According to preliminary information, the Khawarij executed the operation with precision and speed, suggesting prior surveillance and planning. Witnesses reported scenes of panic and fear as the attackers surrounded the vehicle and overpowered the security staff without prolonged resistance.
The armed suspects reportedly blocked the route, threatened the crew with automatic weapons, and swiftly transferred the cash into their own vehicles before escaping toward unknown locations. No immediate claims of responsibility were officially issued; however, security sources linked the attack to Khawarij elements associated with the outlawed TTP network operating in the region.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in districts bordering former conflict zones where Khawarij activity has witnessed a resurgence in recent years.
Security analysts believe such operations not only aim to finance extremist infrastructure and armed campaigns but also serve as psychological warfare designed to undermine public confidence in state institutions and financial security mechanisms.
The use of heavily armed Khawarij in large-scale financial robberies reflects a growing trend in which extremist groups increasingly rely on organized criminal activities, including extortion, kidnappings, and bank heists, to sustain operational networks.
Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation into the incident and initiated search operations in surrounding areas to trace the attackers and recover the stolen funds and weapons. Authorities are reportedly reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and intelligence inputs to identify those involved in the operation and determine whether local facilitators assisted in planning or executing the attack. Security across sensitive financial transportation routes in the region is expected to be further tightened following the incident.
