The security situation in Bannu’s Sub-Division Wazir briefly escalated following reports of the presence of Khawarij elements in the mountainous area of Marka Beera. A swift and coordinated response by the Hathikhel Jirga Committee, supported by local elders and community members, successfully averted a potential threat and forced the Khawarij to withdraw from the area.
According to local sources, credible intelligence regarding the presence of armed Khawarij in the hills of Marka Beera prompted immediate action by the Hathikhel peace committee. Demonstrating a high level of organization and resolve, members of the committee, accompanied by respected tribal elders and armed local volunteers, mobilized rapidly toward the reported location.
Their timely intervention and unified presence exerted sufficient pressure on the Khawarij, compelling them to vacate the area without confrontation. No casualties or damage to property were reported during the operation, underscoring the effectiveness of the community-led initiative.
The Hathikhel tribe has a well-documented history of resistance against extremist elements. In previous instances, the community successfully conducted organized campaigns to rid their area of such groups, restoring stability through collective action and traditional governance mechanisms.
Local elders reiterated their unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. In a joint statement, they emphasized that the community remains vigilant and fully prepared to counter any future attempts by hostile elements to re-establish a foothold.
“We will not allow any element to disrupt the peace of our homeland,” a senior elder stated. “Our unity and resolve are our greatest strengths, and we stand ready to defend them at all costs.”
Security analysts note that such grassroots initiatives play a critical role in complementing formal law enforcement efforts, particularly in areas where terrain and local dynamics pose operational challenges. The proactive stance of the Hathikhel community serves as a significant example of effective local engagement in countering violent extremism.
Authorities have been urged to continue supporting community-based peace efforts while strengthening coordination with local stakeholders to ensure long-term stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
