A rocket shell fired from an unknown direction landed near a residence in the Bannu cantonment area on Monday, causing a loud explosion but no reported casualties or property damage, according to local officials. The shell struck near the District Ordnance Field Commander’s (DOFC) bungalow, prompting a swift security response.
Authorities confirmed that the blast was heard across surrounding neighborhoods, and personnel cordoned off the site to secure evidence and investigate the origin of the attack. While no immediate injuries or damage were reported, officials stressed that the incident forms part of a wider pattern of cross-border aggression by militants in the region.
The attack comes amid ongoing tensions along Pakistan’s western border, where the Afghan Taliban and allied militant groups, including Indian-backed proxies, have been involved in a series of clashes targeting security forces. Recent incidents in South, and North Waziristan, Khyber District, Kurram District, Mohmand District, and Bajaur District illustrate a growing threat pattern.
These provocations coincide with Pakistan’s Operation Ghazab Lil Haqq, under which the security forces have intensified counterterrorism campaigns across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal districts. Over the past days, operations have targeted multiple militant hideouts, neutralizing more than a dozen terrorists linked to cross-border networks, recovering weapons, and destroying fortified positions.
Officials reiterated that while civilians were unharmed in this incident, security forces remain on high alert to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of personnel and residents. They also warned that such attacks underscore the persistent challenges posed by militant proxies exploiting Afghanistan as a base to target Pakistan; and that retaliatory strikes would continue as long as cross-border attacks persist. According to the briefing, even a single attack originating from Afghan territory could trigger multiple retaliatory strikes against militant infrastructure.
