President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the new Army Chief and Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces after receiving the formal summary from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Following presidential approval, the government issued the official notification confirming the appointment. Field Marshal Asim Munir will serve a five year term and remain in office until December 2030.
The President has also approved a two year extension in the service tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu. The extension will take effect once his existing five year term concludes in March 2026.
Career profile of Pakistan’s new Chief of Defence Forces
Field Marshal Asim Munir began his military career in 1986 after graduating from the Officers Training School in Mangla. He was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment and received the Sword of Honour for outstanding performance during training.
His professional education and military training were completed at various key institutions, shaping his progression through the Pakistan Army. Over the years he held a series of important command, staff, and operational assignments.
He was appointed Director General of the Inter Services Intelligence on 25 October 2018. He later served as Corps Commander Gujranwala from 17 June 2019. His career also included a senior staff role as Quartermaster General.
Field Marshal Asim Munir was appointed Chief of Army Staff on 29 November 2022. Under his leadership, Pakistan claimed a decisive military victory over India, after which he was elevated to the rank of Field Marshal.
