A police head constable was gunned down in Bin Qasim Town late Thursday when unidentified assailants opened fire on him, officials confirmed. According to SSP Malir, the slain official was posted at Shah Latif Police Station and was returning home after completing his duty when he was intercepted by three armed attackers. The assailants shot him multiple times, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene.
Police contingents reached the site soon after the incident and shifted the body to a hospital for medico-legal formalities. A search operation was launched in the surrounding areas to trace the attackers, though no arrests were reported till the filing of this report.
The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) later issued a statement claiming responsibility for the targeted killing. The militant outfit has in recent months intensified its activities in different parts of the country, with Karachi witnessing several such incidents targeting law enforcement officials.
Police officials said investigations were under way and evidence was being collected from the crime scene. “The attackers will be brought to justice. We are pursuing multiple leads,” an official source said.
The killing comes amid heightened security concerns in Karachi, where police and Rangers have stepped up patrolling and intelligence-based operations following renewed militant threats.
