The deteriorating law and order situation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has emerged as a major security concern, as a sharp rise in attacks on police personnel, security forces, government officials, and elected representatives continues to threaten peace and stability throughout the province.
Recent incidents have highlighted the growing security challenges confronting the province, particularly in southern districts, Peshawar, Khyber, Bajaur, Kurram, North Waziristan, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan divisions. The increasing frequency of targeted killings, kidnappings, roadside bombings, grenade attacks, and threats against public officials has intensified public anxiety and underscored the urgent need for comprehensive security measures.
The latest tragic incident involved Head Constable Hamza of Hashtnagri Police Station, who was allegedly abducted from his residence within the jurisdiction of Matani Police Station and later embraced martyrdom. His funeral prayers were attended by police officials and colleagues at Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines in Peshawar, reflecting the deep sense of loss within the law enforcement community.
Security incidents have continued to occur across multiple districts. In recent days, a roadside bomb explosion in the Badaber area and a grenade attack in Regi further demonstrated the persistent threat posed by militant and criminal elements. Although casualties were limited in these incidents, they reinforce the broader pattern of insecurity affecting the province.
In North Waziristan, an explosive-laden vehicle detonated near a security post, while security operations in Kurram resulted in the elimination of several militants. Meanwhile, attacks on police stations, checkpoints, official vehicles, and residences of police personnel have become increasingly common, particularly in southern KP.
Police authorities have also advised numerous political, religious, and community leaders across various districts to adopt enhanced security precautions due to credible threats and intelligence reports indicating potential attacks.
The security crisis has extended beyond law enforcement agencies. Numerous politicians, government officials, and public representatives have reportedly received threatening calls and extortion-related messages from criminal and militant groups.
In recent months, the residences and hujras of several Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) in districts including Bajaur, Kurram, Peshawar, and parts of southern KP have been targeted through grenade and rocket attacks. The deteriorating environment has compelled many elected representatives and senior government officials to limit or avoid visits to their hometowns due to fears for their personal safety.
The alarming security situation has drawn concern from the judiciary as well. During proceedings last month, the Peshawar High Court expressed dissatisfaction over the prevailing law and order conditions in several districts of the province.
Chief Justice Syed Attique Shah particularly highlighted the worsening circumstances in southern districts, emphasizing the need for immediate and effective measures to restore public confidence and strengthen security mechanisms.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi recently held discussions with Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi regarding the security challenges facing the province. The Interior Minister assured the provincial leadership of the federal government’s full support in efforts aimed at restoring peace, combating militancy, and strengthening security institutions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police remains at the forefront of the fight against terrorism and militancy and continues to suffer significant losses. According to available data, approximately 600 police personnel have lost their lives in targeted killings, suicide bombings, improvised explosive device (IED) attacks, ambushes, encounters, and other security incidents since 2023.
The casualty figures reveal a disturbing trend:
- 186 police personnel martyred in 2023
- 153 police personnel martyred in 2024
- 159 police personnel martyred in 2025
During the current year alone, more than 90 police personnel have embraced martyrdom, while many others have been injured, abducted, or targeted alongside their family members. Particularly concerning are reports from Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan divisions, where police personnel have faced increasing attacks on both official duties and personal residences, generating widespread concern within the force.
Security data indicates that attacks against law enforcement agencies have intensified further in 2026. During the first quarter of the year, police forces reportedly faced 194 attacks, with the majority occurring in Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan divisions. Security officials successfully foiled more than 108 attempted attacks, preventing potentially significant casualties and damage. However, reports indicate that the frequency and intensity of attacks increased further during April and May, highlighting the evolving threat landscape.
The current security challenges are part of a broader conflict that has affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for nearly two decades. The province witnessed one of the deadliest attacks in Pakistan’s history on January 30, 2023, when a suicide bomber detonated explosives inside the central mosque of Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines in Peshawar. The attack claimed the lives of more than 86 police personnel and injured over 200 others, making it one of the most devastating assaults ever carried out against Pakistan’s law enforcement community.
Since 2006, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police has sacrificed more than 2,000 officers and personnel, ranging from constables to senior-ranking officials, in the line of duty.
Security experts and public representatives have increasingly emphasized the need for a coordinated and comprehensive strategy to address the growing threat posed by militant networks, criminal groups, and extortion rackets operating in different parts of the province. While the government has equipped police forces with modern weapons, bulletproof vehicles, surveillance drones, anti-drone systems, thermal imaging equipment, communication jammers, and other advanced resources, stakeholders stress that enhanced intelligence-sharing, improved coordination among security institutions, and sustained counterterrorism efforts remain critical to restoring lasting peace.
As Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confronts one of its most challenging security periods in recent years, the sacrifices of law enforcement personnel and security forces continue to underscore the urgent need for collective action to safeguard citizens, protect public institutions, and ensure stability throughout the province.
