WANA: A resident of South Waziristan was subjected to severe torture by terrorists of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as Fitna al-Khwarij, after refusing to comply with extortion demands, according to local sources.
The incident reportedly took place in Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan district, where a local resident identified as Zar Janan Wazir was allegedly abducted and brutally assaulted by TTP terrorists.
Sources familiar with the matter said the victim’s refusal to pay extortion money demanded by the terrorist group was the primary reason behind the assault. The individual reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the abuse.
Local residents described the incident as part of a wider pattern of intimidation and coercion employed by terrorist elements seeking to extract money and logistical support from communities living in remote areas.
According to security and local sources, this is not the first time civilians have allegedly faced violence for refusing the demands of TTP-linked terrorists. Similar incidents have previously been reported in various parts of the former tribal districts, where residents were targeted for refusing to pay extortion, provide so-called “ushr” payments, offer shelter, or supply food and other assistance to terrorist groups.
In several past cases, locals who resisted such demands were reportedly threatened, assaulted, or even killed by terrorists.
Security analysts note that extortion and forced collection of funds remain among the key methods used by terrorist organizations to finance their activities, maintain local influence, and sustain operational networks.
The latest incident is likely to further fuel concerns among local communities regarding the continued use of violence and intimidation by terrorist groups against civilians in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
No official statement regarding the incident had been issued at the time of filing this report, while further details were being gathered from local sources.
