A member of police personnel assigned to provide security to a polio vaccination team was injured in a targeted sniper attack in the Darsamand Tabi Kili area of Hangu, highlighting ongoing security challenges in sensitive regions.
According to official sources, unidentified armed assailants opened fire from elevated mountainous positions, targeting police personnel deployed for the protection of a polio campaign team. As a result of the attack, Constable Muhammad Anas sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh. He was immediately provided medical attention, and his condition is reported to be stable.
Following the incident, security forces responded swiftly. Under the leadership of Frontier Corps Maqam Wing Commander Lieutenant Colonel Lakhkar Khan, a coordinated response was initiated involving police and security personnel. The area was promptly cordoned off, and a joint search-and-strike operation was launched to apprehend those responsible.
Security sources confirmed that all available resources are being utilized to track down the attackers. The area has been placed on high alert, with additional measures implemented to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of both civilians and public health teams operating in the region.
The operation was jointly led by SP Investigation Sanober Khan and Lieutenant Colonel Lakhkar Khan, with participation from police units, Frontier Corps personnel, and Al-Barq commandos. Forces conducted extensive searches across the rugged and mountainous terrain of Darsamand, focusing on suspected hideouts and possible escape routes.
During the course of the operation, an exchange of fire occurred between security forces and the assailants. However, the attackers managed to flee, taking advantage of the difficult terrain and complex mountain routes.
Authorities have since declared the immediate area cleared, while expanding the scope of the search operation to surrounding areas. Officials emphasized that operations will continue uninterrupted until the perpetrators are apprehended.
The incident underscores the persistent risks faced by security personnel protecting public health initiatives, particularly in regions where militant activity remains a concern. Officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of polio eradication teams and maintaining security across the district.
