Seven terrorists who attacked the Kohat Police Lines have been killed during the security operation launched after the deadly assault, police sources said.
The attack began with an explosives-laden vehicle being rammed into the premises of the old Police Lines during Friday prayers, followed by attempts by armed terrorists to enter and target police installations. Police and Counter Terrorism Department personnel immediately engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
According to the latest reports, all seven attackers involved in the assault have been eliminated. Earlier reports said the attackers included a suicide bomber and an armed sniper, while the remaining terrorists attempted to infiltrate the police compound and engage security personnel.
The attack caused heavy damage to the mosque and adjoining structures and resulted in a large number of casualties. The latest official and media reports put the death toll at at least 21, including police personnel, while dozens of others were injured.
Rescue teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while police and security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a clearance operation to ensure that no attackers remained hidden inside the compound.
The successful elimination of all seven attackers brings the immediate assault to an end, although security agencies are continuing clearance and investigation operations at the site.
Authorities are also working to determine the identities, affiliations and support network of the attackers. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has publicly denied involvement in the attack, while responsibility and the precise circumstances behind the assault remain subject to investigation.
