The latest exchange comes after unprovoked aggression by the Afghan Taliban along the western border. Pakistani forces have previously targeted terrorist safe havens in response to cross-border attacks.
The Kurram sector has particular strategic importance because of its location along the mountainous Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Border posts in the area have repeatedly remained exposed to firing and attempted attacks from across the border, requiring Pakistani forces to maintain a high state of readiness.
A similar incident in July saw Afghan Taliban forces use heavy weapons and mortars against Pakistani border posts in Kurram. Pakistani forces responded by targeting Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive checkpoints, forcing attackers to abandon several positions and flee, according to security sources.
The latest response also comes amid renewed tensions along the western frontier following a series of terrorist attacks inside Pakistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban administration of allowing terrorist groups, particularly the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), to operate from Afghan soil.
The latest developments underscore the increasingly volatile security environment along the western border, where Pakistan is confronting both cross-border firing by Afghan Taliban forces and the threat posed by terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.
