Pakistan’s security forces foiled an attempted cross-border infiltration by terrorists of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), referred to by Pakistani authorities as Fitna al-Khwarij, in the Kurram sector, with the infiltration attempt reportedly being carried out under the supervision of Afghan Taliban forces.
According to security sources, the infiltration attempt was launched from Afghan Taliban positions in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces, where TTP terrorists allegedly attempted to cross into Pakistan. Pakistani troops deployed along the border detected and effectively repelled the attempt.
Following the failure of the infiltration attempt, Afghan Taliban forces opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector, using heavy weapons, mortars and other arms.
Pakistani security forces responded immediately with heavy and light weapons as well as artillery fire, targeting several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions from which the firing was being conducted.
The retaliatory action forced several Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon their positions and flee, according to security sources. Pakistani forces maintained control of their positions and border areas throughout the exchange.
The sequence of events, according to the sources, links the attempted TTP infiltration with the subsequent Taliban firing, with the latter coming after Pakistani forces prevented the terrorists from crossing the border.
The reported use of Afghan Taliban positions in Nangarhar and Paktia for an infiltration attempt also highlights the security challenges facing Pakistan along its western frontier. The two provinces lie along or near routes historically used for movement across the mountainous border, making surveillance and interdiction particularly important for Pakistani forces.
The latest development comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, with Islamabad repeatedly raising concerns over terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory and using areas under Taliban control to plan or facilitate attacks against Pakistan.
The incident also demonstrates the overlapping nature of the threat confronting Pakistani forces on the western frontier, where troops face both attempts by TTP terrorists to infiltrate Pakistan and firing from Afghan Taliban positions.
Security forces remain on high alert along the Kurram sector and are closely monitoring the border situation. Sources said Pakistani troops are fully prepared to respond immediately and decisively to any further cross-border aggression, infiltration attempt or other provocation.
The situation remains under close surveillance as Pakistani forces continue efforts to prevent terrorist infiltration and secure the country’s western border.
