An overnight rocket attack targeted the Taliban governor’s office and a nearby security checkpoint in Faizabad, the capital of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, with four Taliban members reportedly killed and five others wounded.
The Afghan Liberation Front (FLF) said in a statement Thursday that its fighters carried out the attack late Wednesday, August 19, striking Taliban positions in the provincial capital with rockets. The group said the rocket strikes were followed by a direct clash between its fighters and Taliban forces. According to the statement, the fighting continued for around half an hour, with rocket launchers and various other weapons used during the exchange.
The FLF claimed that none of its fighters were injured.
Local sources reported hearing a rocket impact near the provincial government complex in Faizabad late Wednesday evening, followed by sustained gunfire in the area. Several Taliban security positions are located around the provincial building, making the area a significant security zone in the provincial capital.
The reported attack comes amid growing security tensions in Badakhshan, where Taliban forces have faced armed resistance and mounting political pressure in recent weeks.
The latest incident is particularly significant because the target was located in Faizabad, the administrative centre of Badakhshan, rather than a remote mountainous area. An armed group being able to launch rockets at a government compound and subsequently engage Taliban forces inside the provincial capital underscores the continuing security challenges facing the Taliban despite their control over Afghanistan’s major cities.
The attack also follows recent developments in Badakhshan involving armed groups opposed to Taliban rule, including forces associated with Juma Khan Fateh. His surrender and the subsequent Taliban crackdown in parts of the province have further heightened tensions and uncertainty among local communities.
The reported casualties could not be independently verified, while the Taliban had not immediately issued a detailed public account of the incident.
The developments nevertheless point to a continuing challenge for the Taliban: maintaining control over Afghanistan’s territory is one task, but preventing armed opponents from striking sensitive government and security positions remains a separate and considerably more difficult test.
The reported casualties remain unverified, so the story’s strongest defensible angle is the rocket attack and ensuing clash near Faizabad’s provincial government complex, without adding unsupported claims about wider security trends.
