British Family Appeals to Trump for Release of Detained Couple in Afghanistan

The families of two British citizens detained by the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan have publicly appealed to  US President Donald Trump to intervene and help secure their release, stating that they have been held without charge for the past eight weeks despite repeated assurances of their freedom.

In a video message released on Wednesday, the families said the couple—Peter Reynolds and his spouse—were arrested on February 1st in Bamyan province alongside US citizen Faye Hall and their Afghan interpreter. While Hall was recently released through Qatari mediation and returned to the United States, the British couple remains in custody.

Jonathan Reynolds, the son of the detained couple, said: “They have been held in a prison in Afghanistan by the Taliban without charges for the last 8 weeks. We are continuously told that they have done nothing wrong, they have committed no crime and they will be released shortly, but still they remain in jail.”

Appealing directly to Trump, he added: “Last week you were somehow able to get Faye Hall out of the country and back to the United States. I’m standing here asking and appealing to you to help get my parents out of that jail. They have 13 American citizen grandkids, great grandkids and children.”

The interim Afghan government has not issued a recent statement on the case, but earlier the Ministry of Interior had claimed that the foreign nationals had been detained for specific reasons and that efforts were underway to resolve the matter.

The families maintain that Peter Reynolds and his wife have committed no crime and urge diplomatic efforts to secure their safe return
