A Taliban official associated with the group’s morality police was reportedly shot dead by armed assailants in Aino Mina Township, a prominent residential area of Afghanistan’s historic city of Kandahar.
According to reports, the official was targeted near a public park in Aino Mina. The armed attackers reportedly carried out the shooting before fleeing the area. The incident has since drawn attention due to the claim of responsibility issued by the opposition armed group known as the United Front, which has publicly acknowledged carrying out the attack.
The United Front has also released a video purportedly showing the incident. The footage reportedly depicts an armed individual riding a motorcycle and opening fire on a man dressed in white, whom the group identifies as a Taliban morality police official. The authenticity and independent verification of the footage have not been established.
In a statement issued following the incident, the United Front claimed that members of the Taliban morality police have subjected young people to what it described as violence, humiliation, and psychological and physical mistreatment. The group further stated that, in response to what it characterizes as these practices, morality police personnel have now been formally included among its designated military targets.
The United Front described the Kandahar incident as its first formally announced operation directly targeting the Taliban’s morality police system, marking a potentially significant development in the group’s stated campaign against Taliban institutions and personnel.
The reported attack comes amid continuing tensions surrounding the Taliban’s enforcement of its social and moral codes.
