Pakistan’s military history carries the names of men whose courage transcended the battlefield, and Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, stands among the country’s most revered heroes.

Commissioned into the Punjab Regiment, Major Tufail Muhammad distinguished himself through his professional ability, leadership and commitment to duty. The Battle for Laxmipur
The Laxmipur sector, located close to the Indian border in what was then East Pakistan, had assumed strategic importance amid growing tensions along the frontier.
The area was also being used for the smuggling of Indian goods into East Pakistan. To curb such illegal activity and safeguard the border, the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) had been deployed in the area.
According to the account, the Indian Army occupied the Laxmipur sector in August 1958 in violation of international norms, with the occupation also linked to efforts to provide protection to smugglers operating in the area.
Major Tufail Muhammad was entrusted with the crucial responsibility of helping liberate the Laxmipur area from enemy occupation.
The mission demanded not only tactical skill but extraordinary personal courage, as the enemy had established strong defensive positions in the area.
The Final Assault
On the night of August 7, Major Tufail Muhammad led his men towards the enemy positions, determined to confront the entrenched forces despite the formidable risks involved.
He did not remain behind the lines. He personally led the assault against the enemy’s fortified positions, placing himself at the forefront of the battle.
The operation demanded the highest degree of courage and leadership. Major Tufail continued directing and encouraging his men even as the fighting intensified.
His conduct on the battlefield demonstrated the defining quality of a soldier who places duty above personal safety. He entered the battle knowing the risks, but his commitment to the mission and the defence of his country remained unwavering.
The battle ultimately became the defining chapter of his life, transforming Major Tufail Muhammad from a courageous military officer into a national symbol of sacrifice.
For his extraordinary bravery and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded Pakistan’s highest military gallantry award, the Nishan-e-Haider.
His name now stands among the country’s most distinguished military heroes, remembered not merely for the battle he fought, but for the spirit with which he fought it.
