Three civilians, including a five-year-old child, were injured after terrorists carried out a quadcopter attack in the Narmi Khel area of Baka Khel tehsil in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district on Sunday, according to local sources.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where they received medical treatment. Their condition could not immediately be confirmed through official sources.

Initial reports indicate that the terrorists used a quadcopter to drop an explosive device in a civilian area, injuring the three residents. The incident has heightened concerns over the increasing use of commercially available drones by terrorist groups operating in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Security officials launched an assessment of the attack, while law enforcement agencies began collecting evidence to determine the exact nature of the explosive used and identify those responsible.

The latest incident comes amid a noticeable rise in quadcopter-based attacks in Bannu and adjoining districts, where terrorist groups have increasingly employed drones to target security personnel as well as civilians. Security experts say such attacks are intended not only to inflict casualties but also to create fear among local communities, undermine public confidence in the state’s security apparatus, and fuel propaganda aimed at portraying the government and security forces in a negative light.

Bannu, particularly the Baka Khel and Miryan areas, has remained one of the country’s most vulnerable districts to this evolving tactic. During the past two years, terrorists have repeatedly used quadcopters to drop explosive devices on police stations, security check posts and populated localities, reflecting an operational shift from conventional hit-and-run assaults to the use of inexpensive aerial platforms.

The district has simultaneously witnessed suicide attacks, assaults on police installations, targeted killings and coordinated attacks involving large numbers of terrorists. One of the deadliest incidents occurred earlier this year when terrorists launched a major assault on security positions in Bannu using explosives, firearms and quadcopters, highlighting the growing sophistication of terrorist tactics in the region.

Security analysts believe these attacks are designed to achieve two strategic objectives. The first is to terrorize local populations by demonstrating that terrorists retain the ability to strike civilian and security targets alike. The second is to exploit the resulting fear to spread misinformation and anti-state narratives by attempting to falsely attribute responsibility for civilian casualties to Pakistan’s security forces.

Officials have yet to issue a detailed statement regarding Sunday’s incident. Investigations are underway to establish the perpetrators, assess the damage and determine whether the attack forms part of a broader pattern of coordinated terrorist activity in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
