The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has renewed its call for the immediate lifting of restrictions on education for Afghan women and girls, marking the International Day of Girls in ICT.
In a statement issued on Thursday, April 23, the UN mission said education for women and girls remains essential for innovation, employment, and building a sustainable future in Afghanistan.
UNAMA noted that 1,675 days have passed since education beyond the sixth grade was banned, adding that an entire generation of Afghan girls has been deprived of its right to education during this period.
Since returning to power, the Taliban have barred girls from attending secondary schools, universities, and other higher education institutions.
Afghan citizens, international organizations, Islamic countries, and the broader global community have repeatedly condemned these restrictions and called for their reversal.
The Taliban, however, continue to describe the issue as an internal matter and have urged foreign actors not to interfere in Afghanistan’s domestic affairs.
Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls are prohibited from receiving education beyond the sixth grade.
