Residents of Afghanistan’s remote Nuristan province have made an urgent appeal to Pakistan for humanitarian assistance as escalating food shortages and economic hardship leave the local population struggling to survive, according to local community leaders.
Azam Nuristani, head of the Nuristan Elite Organization, told Afghanistan International in an interview that the province’s elders have increasingly turned to Pakistan with hopeful expectations amid the deteriorating situation. “The ongoing food crisis in the region has placed immense strain on the people, and conditions are worsening with each passing day,” he said.
Nuristani highlighted that basic services were already limited in Nuristan’s remote districts, but the current crisis has further exacerbated the hardships faced by the population. “The local communities are not only confronting severe food scarcity but are also grappling with insecurity and uncertainty, making daily life extremely difficult,” he added.
He further emphasized that tribal elders in Nuristan are formally appealing to Pakistan for immediate humanitarian aid and support. Such assistance, he noted, is crucial to providing relief and sustaining the affected population during this critical period.
The appeal underscores the urgent need for cross-border cooperation and humanitarian intervention in Afghanistan’s remote regions, where decades of limited infrastructure, combined with recent economic and food crises, have placed vulnerable communities at risk. Aid agencies and neighboring countries are being called upon to respond swiftly to prevent further deterioration of living conditions in the province.
