A quadcopter attack by Fitna al-Khawarij on the civilian population in the Azam Warsak area of Barmal Tehsil, Lower South Waziristan, has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of Khawarij violence against innocent civilians. According to the information available, the attack resulted in the death of a six-year-old child and seriously injured two other children, including a nine-year-old girl.
The victims are reported to be siblings, making the tragedy even more painful for their family and community. A family that should have been focused on the ordinary joys and responsibilities of daily life has instead been confronted with the death of one child and serious injuries to two others.
According to details, Fitna al-Khawarij carried out the quadcopter attack in Azam Warsak, Barmal, striking a civilian population and killing a six-year-old child. Two other children reportedly sustained serious injuries, including a nine-year-old girl. The incident has generated deep grief and anger among local residents, who have strongly condemned what they describe as another cowardly attack against unarmed civilians.
The killing of a six-year-old child cannot be reduced to a casualty figure. It represents the loss of an innocent life and an immeasurable tragedy for the child’s parents, siblings and relatives. The two injured children are likewise facing the physical and emotional consequences of an attack that they had no role in and no ability to prevent.
Security forces responded promptly following the incident and shifted the injured children to the District Headquarters Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Due to the seriousness of their injuries, the children were subsequently transferred to Dera Ismail Khan, where they are receiving further medical care. Their recovery remains a matter of deep concern for their family and the local community.
The reported use of a quadcopter in an attack affecting a civilian population adds another disturbing dimension to the incident. Technology that can be used for surveillance or other purposes can become a deadly instrument when placed in the hands of those willing to target populated areas. The Azam Warsak incident also comes only a day after another reported quadcopter attack attributed to Fitna al-Khawarij in Toi Khula Tehsil of Lower South Waziristan. According to the information provided, four members of the same family, including children, were injured in that incident. The two reported incidents in such a short period have further increased concern among local residents and raised fears about the safety of civilian communities.
For the people of South Waziristan and adjoining areas, the threat posed by the Khawarij is not a distant security concern. It directly affects families, children, women and ordinary citizens who simply want to live peacefully in their communities. Parents should not have to fear that their children could become victims while living, working or moving around in their own neighborhoods.
The reported targeting of children is particularly disturbing because children have neither responsibility for nor involvement in the political and ideological disputes that fuel violence. They are among the most vulnerable members of society and deserve protection regardless of political circumstances, ethnicity, geography or background.
The incident therefore raises a fundamental question about the ideology and claims of those responsible: What kind of Islam and what kind of Sharia can justify violence against innocent children?
Those who invoke religion while causing the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians should be challenged by religious scholars, community leaders and society as a whole. The killing of children cannot be transformed into an acceptable act by attaching an ideological or political justification to it.
