A senior official linked to the Afghan Taliban’s intelligence apparatus has reportedly been killed in the capital, according to multiple sources associated with the group, though authorities have yet to issue an official explanation.
Mawlawi Numan Ghaznavi, who served within the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) and worked as secretary to the agency’s chief, Abdul Haq Wasiq, was confirmed dead by Taliban-affiliated social media accounts and local sources. However, no formal statement has been released detailing how or why the incident occurred.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Ghaznavi died at his residence in the Butkhak area of eastern Kabul. The precise circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, fueling speculation amid an absence of official clarification.
Unverified reports circulating online have offered conflicting accounts, ranging from an internal incident within the home to potential security-related causes. Taliban authorities, however, have neither confirmed nor denied any of these claims, and no group has stepped forward to claim responsibility.
Ghaznavi was regarded as a close and trusted aide to Abdul Haq Wasiq, one of the Taliban’s most prominent intelligence figures. His reported death has raised questions within Afghan political and security circles, particularly given his senior role within the intelligence structure.
As of now, Taliban officials have remained silent on the matter, and investigations if any have not been publicly acknowledged. The lack of transparency has contributed to uncertainty surrounding the incident, with observers awaiting further clarification from Kabul.
