Security Forces Thwart IED Plot in Spinwam, North Waziristan

Security forces on Wednesday foiled a terrorist attempt to target a military convoy in the busy Spinwam Bazaar area of North Waziristan, officials said.

According to security sources, militants associated with the so-called khawarij planted an improvised explosive device to strike a passing convoy. The device was detected in time and safely defused, preventing what authorities said could have caused significant civilian casualties in the crowded marketplace.

The incident once again underscored the militants’ disregard for human life. Officials said their actions continue to be driven by chaos, violence and financial incentives rather than any ideological objective.

Security forces cordoned off the area soon after the discovery and launched a clearance operation to track down those involved. Further investigations were under way.

Earlier, a police checkpoint in the Mandan area of Bannu came under attack when motorcycle borne terrorists opened fire during routine checking late Tuesday. Police retaliated swiftly, killing one militant and injuring another. Heavy contingents, including QRF, RRF and APCs, were deployed as senior officers reached the site and launched a search operation. The identity of the dead attacker is being verified, and searches continue.

Senior officials, including DIG Bannu Sajjad Khan and DPO Yasir Afridi, commended the police team for their rapid and effective response and announced commendation certificates and cash rewards for the personnel involved. They reiterated the commitment to eliminate militant elements from the region.
