Punjab Police on Tuesday claimed to have thwarted a major terrorist plot linked to fitna al-Khawarij in the tribal belt of Dera Ghazi Khan, successfully neutralising an improvised explosive device (IED) planted to target security forces.
According to details, the Dera Ghazi Khan Police, acting on intelligence, launched a search operation in the border region of Jaday Wala, falling under the jurisdiction of the Wahwa Police Station. The operation was carried out jointly by the Special Operations Unit (SOU) and elite commando teams. During the sweep, police recovered a locally manufactured IED planted near the Jaday Wala graveyard. The device was later defused by the bomb disposal squad.
A Punjab Police spokesperson confirmed that the IED had been installed by Khawarij terrorists with the specific intention of targeting security personnel in the area. However, due to timely action by the police and elite force teams, a potentially devastating tragedy was averted.
“The vigilance and swift response of the force ensured the safety of security personnel and residents of the area, who could have been caught in a deadly explosion,” the spokesperson said.
Inspector General (IG) Punjab lauded the performance of the Dera Ghazi Khan Police, commending their professionalism in foiling the terrorist plot. He further stated that Punjab Police would continue operations against terrorists and their facilitators until peace and stability are fully restored in the province.
Security officials noted that the tribal belt of Dera Ghazi Khan has long been exploited by terrorist groups attempting to infiltrate and target state institutions. The latest operation reflects the police’s strengthened counter-terrorism measures and commitment to safeguarding border districts.
Authorities said search and clearance operations would continue in the border regions to eliminate the threat of terrorism and to ensure that such attempts are crushed before they can materialise.
