The seventh round of negotiations in the ongoing Bajaur peace jirga has reached a deadlock, with both sides remaining divided over a key point of disagreement. Speaking to the media, peace jirga head Sahibzada Haroon Rashid said the jirga had urged both parties to exercise patience and restraint. He added that assurances were given that, in the event of any armed conflict, the lives and property of civilians would not be harmed.
Sahibzada Haroon Rashid reiterated the jirga’s commitment to continue playing its role in ensuring peace in the future, emphasising that dialogue was essential for resolving disputes. He also called on the Afghan government to contribute towards maintaining stability in the region.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has summoned the Bajaur peace jirga to the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar on August 9, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the province’s law and order situation.
It may be recalled that on August 3, 2025, the jirga had announced that both sides had agreed to a complete ceasefire, granting a deadline until 6pm for negotiations to proceed. However, the lack of progress in the latest round has further complicated the situation.
