A woman was killed and a young girl injured after a mortar shell, fired by the terrorists of the proscribed group from an unknown location, struck a residential house in the Miryan area of Bannu district, according to police and rescue sources.
Officials said the projectile, fired from an unknown direction, landed on the home in the rural locality, causing severe structural damage and triggering panic in the surrounding area. The woman present inside the house died on the spot, while the injured child was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the child is receiving medical care and remains under observation. Her condition was not immediately described as critical.
Following the incident, police, security forces, and Rescue 1122 teams reached the site and launched relief and clearance operations. The area was cordoned off as investigators began collecting evidence to determine the origin and nature of the projectile.
Police have registered a case and initiated a formal investigation into the incident. Officials said the source of the mortar fire has not yet been confirmed and inquiries are ongoing.
In a separate incident reported earlier in the same broader region, four people were killed and two others injured in a firing episode in the limits of Thana Kaki, where police said an internal dispute escalated into violence. The victims included a woman and three others, while a child was among the injured.
Authorities are investigating both incidents independently, while security measures in the area have been intensified as part of routine response protocols in volatile districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Officials added that all available resources are being utilized to trace those responsible for the mortar incident and to prevent further escalation in the region.
