A federal court in New York has sentenced Haji Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, to 42 years in prison for his involvement in the 2008 kidnapping of American journalist David Rohde and two of his companions.
U.S. federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday, June 9, that Najibullah played a direct operational role in the abduction of Rohde, who was then working for The New York Times, along with his Afghan interpreter and their driver. The kidnapping took place in 2008, after which the three individuals were held hostage for more than seven months across multiple locations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
According to court documents presented during the proceedings, the captives were moved between various hideouts during their captivity. Prosecutors stated that the abductors sought ransom payments as well as the release of several detained Taliban members in exchange for the hostages’ freedom.
The court further heard that the victims were subjected to psychological pressure during their captivity and were forced to record “proof-of-life” videos. In these recordings, armed Taliban fighters were seen issuing threats while the hostages appealed for their release.
Najibullah, who served as a Taliban commander in Afghanistan’s Wardak province beginning in 2007, was also linked by U.S. authorities to ambush attacks targeting American and coalition forces during that period.
David Rohde and his interpreter ultimately managed to escape captivity after approximately seven months in detention, bringing an end to their ordeal.
Authorities confirmed that Haji Najibullah was arrested in Ukraine in October 2020. Following his arrest, he was extradited to the United States, where he stood trial on multiple charges related to terrorism and hostage-taking.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of a long-running international case highlighting cross-border militant activity and the targeting of journalists and civilians in conflict zones.
