Police in Upper Dir have arrested a suicide bomber identified as Naeemullah, a resident of Barikot Dobando, in a significant counter-terrorism development.
According to police, Naeemullah was taken into custody and subsequently shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation. Investigators are expected to determine the intended target, his handlers and the network involved in preparing or facilitating his planned attack.
The arrest is particularly significant amid heightened security activity in Upper Dir, where law-enforcement and security agencies have been stepping up intelligence-based measures to prevent terrorist attacks and identify individuals involved in terrorist networks.
Police have not yet disclosed further details about the circumstances of the arrest or whether the bomber had already been assigned a specific target. Such details are expected to emerge as interrogation and investigation proceed.
The development comes a day after the Dobando check-post attack in Upper Dir, which had prompted heightened security measures in the area. The arrest of a suicide bomber from Barikot Dobando now adds another important development to the security picture in the district, although authorities have yet to publicly establish any connection between the arrested bomber and that attack.
Further investigation is under way.
