In a significant step towards strengthening Pakistan’s capacity to combat emerging financial crimes, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has established a Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit to address the growing challenges posed by the misuse of digital assets.
According to officials, the specialized unit has been established on the special directives of the Director General FIA and will serve as a dedicated platform for investigating crimes involving cryptocurrency and other digital financial technologies.
The newly established unit will primarily investigate cases involving the alleged use of cryptocurrency for money laundering and the financing of terrorism, while also monitoring suspicious financial transactions conducted through digital currencies. The initiative reflects the FIA’s commitment to enhancing oversight of evolving financial systems and addressing the risks associated with illicit digital financial activities.
FIA authorities further stated that the Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit will also investigate cyber-enabled financial crimes, cryptocurrency-related fraud, and other offenses involving digital assets. The unit is expected to play a key role in identifying complex financial crime networks operating through virtual currencies and modern payment technologies.
Officials emphasized that the unit will utilize advanced technological tools, digital forensic capabilities, and internationally recognized investigative standards to conduct comprehensive and professional investigations. The adoption of modern investigative techniques is intended to strengthen the FIA’s ability to detect, investigate, and prosecute sophisticated financial crimes involving cryptocurrencies.
In addition to investigations, the specialized unit will focus on preventing the misuse of cryptocurrency by enhancing intelligence gathering, improving monitoring mechanisms, and supporting effective legal action against individuals or networks involved in unlawful digital financial activities.
Authorities noted that the establishment of the Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit represents another important milestone in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its financial crime enforcement framework and improve institutional capacity to respond to rapidly evolving technological threats.
