RAWALPINDI: Pakistan and France have discussed regional security and ways to expand bilateral cooperation in the defense and security sectors, as senior officials from both sides reaffirmed their interest in strengthening ties.
Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held a meeting with France’s Secretary General for Defence and National Security Nicolas Roche at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). French Ambassador Jean-Noël Poirier also accompanied Roche.
The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment and opportunities to further enhance bilateral cooperation in defense and security, the military’s media wing said.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with France, with particular emphasis on expanding cooperation in the defense and security domains.
The discussions come as Pakistan continues to engage with international partners on evolving regional security challenges, defense cooperation and efforts aimed at promoting regional stability.
Roche appreciated Pakistan’s efforts toward promoting peace and stability in the region, according to ISPR. The French official also expressed France’s interest in expanding cooperation with Pakistan in areas of mutual interest.
The meeting provided another opportunity for Islamabad and Paris to review their security-related engagement at a time when regional conflicts, cross-border terrorism and broader security concerns continue to shape the strategic environment.
Pakistan and France have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with their engagement extending across political, economic, defense, cultural and other areas. Defense and security cooperation has remained one component of the broader bilateral relationship.
The latest talks underscored the two sides’ stated interest in maintaining high-level engagement and exploring additional avenues for cooperation, particularly in areas linked to defense, security and regional peace.
The meeting was held against the backdrop of Pakistan’s continuing efforts to strengthen international partnerships while addressing security challenges along its borders and in the wider region.
