Pakistani security forces have successfully foiled an attempted cross-border infiltration in the Kurram sector, according to security sources, amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
According to the sources, the infiltration attempt was launched from areas in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces, where militants identified by Pakistani authorities as Fitna al-Khawarij attempted to cross into Pakistani territory. The movement was detected and effectively countered by security personnel deployed along the frontier, preventing the infiltrators from making a successful entry into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Following the failure of the infiltration attempt, security sources said that Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector. The firing reportedly involved heavy weapons, including mortars and other arms, and targeted Pakistani positions along the border.
Pakistani security forces responded promptly and effectively to the firing, engaging the positions from which the attacks were being carried out. According to security sources, Pakistani forces employed artillery and other available firepower against multiple Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive locations. The response was aimed at neutralising the immediate threat and protecting Pakistani personnel and border positions from further fire.
The exchange of fire reportedly continued intermittently amid heightened tensions along the frontier. Separate reporting on the incident said that the firing began during the afternoon of 22 September, although details regarding casualties and the extent of damage were not independently confirmed at the time of reporting.
Security sources further claimed that the intensity of the Pakistani response resulted in several Afghan Taliban personnel abandoning their positions. Pakistani forces, meanwhile, maintained control of their positions and continued monitoring developments along the border.
The incident underscores the continuing security challenges along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, particularly in areas vulnerable to attempted militant infiltration and cross-border firing. Security forces remain fully alert and closely monitoring the border situation.
