The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) has claimed responsibility for an attack on a vehicle carrying Taliban personnel in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, reporting that at least three Taliban members were killed and two others wounded in the incident.
According to a statement issued by the AFF, its fighters targeted the vehicle near the Taliban provincial Mines Directorate in Faizabad. The group said the attack resulted in casualties among the Taliban personnel travelling in the vehicle.
Earlier the same day, local sources reported an explosion in the Jalghar area of Faizabad, with initial accounts indicating that a vehicle had been targeted. Images received from the area reportedly showed a column of smoke rising from a road along a mountainous stretch, providing visual indications of an explosion at the reported location.
Afghanistan International, an Afghan media stated that the intended target of the attack may have been Mullah Abdul Mansour, identified as the Taliban commander of Faizabad’s Seventh Police District. According to those sources, Mullah Abdul Mansour survived the incident. The AFF, however, did not identify the intended target in its statement.
The conflicting or incomplete information surrounding the intended target means that the precise circumstances of the attack remain subject to further verification.
Following the explosion, ambulances were reportedly dispatched to the scene to evacuate those injured in the incident. The extent of the casualties and the condition of those wounded could not be independently established from the information available.
