United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over India’s recent missile attacks on Pakistan, calling for maximum military restraint from both sides amid rising tensions in the region.
According to Turkish news agency Anadolu, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that Guterres is gravely concerned over Indian military actions along the Line of Control and the international border with Pakistan.
“The Secretary-General urges both countries to exercise maximum military restraint,” Dujarric said in an official statement, emphasizing that “the world cannot afford a military escalation between Pakistan and India.”
Guterres’ remarks came in the immediate aftermath of India’s launch of “Operation Sandhur,” under which it reportedly carried out 24 missile strikes at six locations in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
In response, Pakistan retaliated forcefully, reportedly destroying five of India’s frontline Rafale fighter jets, multiple drones, and several military outposts.
The UN chief’s call underscores the urgency for de-escalation, as international concern mounts over the potential for a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
