Taliban’s Push for Ties with India Exposes Desperation for Legitimacy

Indian envoy Anand Prakash and senior officials met Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul today, discussing political relations, trade, and transit.

The Taliban’s eagerness to court India highlights their growing desperation to gain international legitimacy, despite continuing human rights abuses and internal repression. Critics see these talks as hollow attempts by the Taliban to mask their failures and distract from their brutal governance.

While the Taliban seek to present a façade of normalcy, the reality in Afghanistan remains unchanged — a regime marked by extremism, oppression, and broken promises to its own people.

India’s engagement with an unrecognized and oppressive regime also raises serious concerns. By legitimizing the Taliban through such meetings, New Delhi risks compromising its long-standing principles against terrorism and undermines broader efforts to hold extremist governments accountable.
