Afghanistan remains a major global humanitarian priority, with the United Nations continuing its efforts to support people in need, UN relief chief Tom Fletcher has said, stressing that the Taliban must allow female humanitarian workers to carry out their duties.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Fletcher said the United Nations had a substantial humanitarian programme in place to assist Afghans facing humanitarian needs.
However, he emphasized that the Taliban must ensure female aid workers are allowed to work, highlighting the essential role women play in delivering humanitarian assistance.
Fletcher stressed that the participation of female humanitarian workers was crucial to reaching vulnerable communities and ensuring that assistance reached those in need.
His remarks underscored the continuing challenges facing humanitarian operations in Afghanistan, where restrictions on women’s employment have complicated aid delivery.
The UN has repeatedly emphasized the importance of allowing women to participate fully in humanitarian operations to ensure effective assistance reaches communities across the country.
