Pakistan has formally assumed the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for the 2026–27 period, marking an important opportunity for the country to contribute to the organisation’s regional agenda and strengthen cooperation among its member states.
The chairmanship comes at a significant time for the region, as the SCO continues to serve as an important platform for dialogue, cooperation and engagement among participating countries. As part of Pakistan’s engagement with the organisation, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar held a meeting in Bishkek with the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. During the meeting, Senator Ishaq Dar briefed the SCO Secretary-General on Pakistan’s priorities and strategic approach for the duration of its chairmanship.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the way forward and to discuss measures aimed at ensuring effective coordination between Pakistan and the SCO Secretariat throughout the chairmanship period. Senator Ishaq Dar outlined Pakistan’s vision for advancing the organisation’s priorities and emphasized the importance of close institutional engagement in translating shared objectives into meaningful outcomes.
The SCO Secretary-General congratulated Pakistan on assuming the chairmanship and conveyed his assurance of full cooperation and support.
