The Afghanistan Freedom Front has claimed responsibility for targeting a Taliban vehicle during fighting in Sanglich village of Zibak district, Badakhshan Province, on Saturday, (August 15, 2026).
According to a statement issued by the Freedom Front, its fighters targeted a Taliban Ranger vehicle carrying armed Taliban personnel who were reportedly attempting to withdraw from the area of combat. The group claimed that the vehicle was equipped with a heavy machine gun and small arms.
The Freedom Front stated that its fighters carried out a precision strike against the vehicle as it was allegedly fleeing the battlefield. Following the attack, the Ranger reportedly plunged into a valley, while the status of those aboard remained unknown.
The group further claimed that Taliban forces suffered casualties during the day’s clashes, while stating that none of its own fighters were injured in the reported engagements.
The reported incident comes amid renewed fighting in parts of Badakhshan, where armed opposition groups have periodically challenged Taliban forces and sought to maintain positions in mountainous and strategically significant areas.
According to the Freedom Front’s account, the engagement in Zibak involved direct clashes between its fighters and Taliban forces, with the reported targeting of the Ranger occurring as Taliban personnel attempted to leave the combat zone.
The mountainous geography of Badakhshan, characterized by narrow valleys and difficult terrain, can present significant operational challenges for forces attempting to move between positions.
